Song of the Day
Today's song is to honor the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11. I thought for awhile about what song would even be appropriate to honor the memory and I chose the Coldplay's the Scientist. While the song, contextually has a different a meaning- the one line of "It's such a shame for us to part" just seems befitting. Honor those we've lost and the brave men and women to saved so many that day.

Albums to Listen to: Pinkerton
Every once and while I like to post something beside a song of the day, whether it be a playlist of songs I'm listening to, or highlighting a certain artist or album. Today I wanted to highlight an amazing album from what I believe to be one of most interesting bands of the 90's (and of course today). The group is Weezer, and the album that I wanted to focus on was their second album, Pinkerton.
While not as well known as their amazing debut, simply called Weezer, while most affectionately called it The Blue Album. Pinkerton was in a sense, an operatic experiment, in which a common theme and almost story is woven in the short 10 song album. While critics and fans at its initial release declared it a commercial/critical failure, the album would face a resurgence in the 2000s, where the album was met with praise, some critics calling it one of the most important albums of the 90s- and re-release of a deluxe edition in 2010.
The album is named after the protagonist of Giacomo Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly. Lead singer Rivers Cuomo draws upon the story and the structure of the opera to create the album and uses many illusions from the story, such as references to the Japanese culture and allusions within the Japanese style narratives in the songs. He also makes direct references to the opera by mentioning Cio Cio San, one of the main characters of the opera, and the beautifully written song Butterfly, a direct reference to Cio Cio San's nickname. Cuomo wrote this album in a very dark place, while studying at Harvard and feeling a complete sense of isolationism. This isolationism rings true throughout the album, especially on songs like Tired of Sex, where Cuomo espouses how he is tired of meaningless one night stands and Across the Sea, where Cuomo writes a narrative about he receives a letter from a Japanese fan and how much Cuomo wants to meet the author. Another theme that Cuomo runs through the album is a sense of seal loathing, such as the Good Life where Cuomo asks what he's been doing with his life, and how he can get back to said "good life".
What is truly genius about the album is Cuomo's willingness to write honest and very raw lyrics. The songs are very candid, and no wonder looking back, Cuomo is a little embarrassed of such a revealing album. One of the key elements of the album is sexual repression in which Cuomo reveals his darker sexual desires and repressions, which can be very literal and sometimes graphic. Going back to the song Across the Sea, Cuomo in one line of the song questions if she thinks of him when she masturbates. Tying with his sexual repression is the idea of longing, in which Cuomo longs for the unattainable half-Japanese girl in El Sorcho (who Cuomo explains is a real girl who in true nerd fashion he actually never spoke to, so he wrote a song about her) and the lesbian who is clearly out his grasp in the song Pink Triangle.
His honest song writing, compared with the musical talent of his group is what makes this album is interesting and so unique in the Weezer's repertoire. It is a for the most part a concept album, but it done so honestly and like Cuomo's style, so nerdy. I would say this album isn't for everyone, it took years to be accepted and fully embraced by the mainstream, and honestly at my first listen didn't catch my eye either, if anything just made me feel uncomfortable and weird, but maybe that's what Cuomo's point is- to be so honest, raw and candid, you are going to make others uncomfortable. Either way, a major success for the group and another reason to keep making that dorky =W= symbol with my hands.

Current Albums
I haven't done a non-song of the day post in awhile! So I thought it would be fun to look at some of the albums I've been listening to currently. Tell me what you think and tell me what you are listening to!
1. Adele- 21
What could be said about Adele? Her voice is the real draw to this amazing album and she makes you feel like she is in the room with you. Smokey, sultry and just soulful Adele could sing the alphabet and it would still be marvelous. 21- the name of sophomore album and how old she was when she wrote the album is all about the natural progression of a relationship, ending with the beautiful but tragic Someone Like You where she claims that she is still in love with a man who has not only moved on, but has found happiness. There is a great mix to the album all tied together by the soulfulness of her voice. I recommend 21 to anyone and listen to what a real artist sounds like.
Repeat that track!: Rolling in the Deep, Someone to Love, Set Fire to the Rain
2. Ellie Goulding- Bright Lights
I feel like this blog has recently become a small ode to Miss Goulding. I can't state how great this British import is and I hope you will find out for yourself. Ellie's album, Bright Lights is a mash up of folk(y-ness), electronic pop and personal lyrics. What stands out in the album is Ellie's voice- kind of strange at first, but eventually that whispy-ness and vulnerability of her voice just adds to the songs. Working with super-producers Starsmith and Frankmusik, they added that dash of electro-pop edge just to give Ellie a different sound that for all purposes works. While the softness of her voice might mislead to thinking that the album is featherweight, take a listen. Her songs are about heavy subjects, such as destructive relationships on a physical and psychological level (Under the Sheets), dealing with relationship and in ways forsaken it (This Love Will be Your Downfall) and a jump into the darker side of sexuality (Animal). Check out this debut album because she's def. here to stay.
Songs to repeat!: Under the Sheets, Guns and Horses, This Love Will be Your Downfall
3. Mumford and Sons- Sigh No More
I think it's safe to say they have gained a huge following. Sigh No More the debut album from Mumford and Sons, in which it combines the sounds of traditional American bluegrass, alternative and pop elements that really drives their sound home. There is something exceptionally sad about their lyrics and while they may not be the most insightful lyrics, the simplicity plays well with the music. Songs such as Winter Winds and Little Lion Man, show a sense of belonging and guilt for mistaken deeds. I think it fits well within the genre of bluegrass and that melancholy-ness that pervades it. Either way, it's a great genre breaking album that you can't just help but love.
4. Nelly Furtado- Folklore
Probably the oldest album on this list right now, I was looking for something to listen to the other day and I remembered that Folklore, the sophomore album by Nelly Furtado was always a great and unique listen. I then pulled up the album on my iTunes and I remembered why I had love Furtado as an artist. While most known for her third album, Loose, a more pop driven album and a little more sexually provacative, Folklore shows Furtado going back to her roots- drawing from an eclectic mix of different cultural music and her own Portuguese heritage. This album is definitely more experimental than her debut album Whoa, Nelly! and that's what makes this such a fun album. While not for everyone, she shouts to the roof tops that she's proud of who is she (songs like One Trick Pony and Powerless). Nelly Furtado also really matured as a song writer during this album, and my favorite track of hers (of all time) Try is a very mature acceptance of growing up, the pain that we all face and will continue to face. Check out this overlooked album!
Song to repeat!: Try, One Trick Pony, Explode, Forca
5. Panic! at the Disco- Vices and Virtue
Panic is back and with a vengeance! Making a huge lineup change (pretty much changing everyone but Brandon the lead singer) and being left with a drummer, Panic! at the Disco's third album, Vices and Virtues is def. a return to form after their second album. A continuation of the fast, electronic/burlesque type music, but a little earthy and more guitar driven then the previous albums, Vices and Virtues has some great tracks on it. The album's first single, Ballad of Mona Lisa explodes with a piano rift, and those strangely macabre Panic lyrics that they have mastered so well. Other great tracks like Ready to Go and Hurricane spell the return of this fun, contemporary and kind of poignant band. It's time to panic.
Songs to repeat!: Ballad of Mona Lisa, Hurricanes, Memories, Ready to Go
6. Mark Ronson and the Business Intl.- Record Collection
The third album from super producer Mark Ronson is pure genius. Creating a huge ensemble of his favorite artists, such as the lovely Rose Dougall, electro-pop princess MDNR, Q-Tip, Andrew Wyatt (of Miike Snow) and Alex Greenwald (of Phantom Planet) and calling them the Business Intl'. The album is a fantastic ode to the 80's drawing forth the synths and rythms of Culture Club and Duran Duran (who he gets represenatives from each group to guest star on songs- Somebody to Love Me and Record Collection respectively). The songs are fun, strange and catchy all the same time. I think a representative sample of the entire album is the weird, infectious and inspired by the traditional French song "Alouette"- Bang Bang Bang- a song that is led by Q-Tip and MDNR. I've been playing this album non-stop and you should check it out!
Songs to Repeat!: Bang Bang Bang, Record Collection(Mark Ronson's singing debut!), Somebody to Love Me
1. Adele- 21

Favorite Songs from Movies
Every once and awhile I like to add a playlist about a different topic. This week I wanted to do a playlist on my favorite songs from films. I think music makes films- that that perfect harmony of music, dialogue, mis en scene and visuals can speak louder than words. So I created a playlist with my favorite songs used in films.
1. Sufjan Stevens: Chicago from Little Miss Sunshine
There is something about this movie that I truly love. I think it’s because of its message- that in life there is always going to be someone better than you: smarter, funnier, more athletic, etc. That if you continue to compare yourself to others you’ll never truly be happy with yourself, rather, by embracing who we are, life turns out to be a lot better. I think it is hilarious that the writer of the film says the whole idea stemmed from a quote from California Governor Schwarzenegger in which he talks about how much he hates losers and how misguided that frame thought truly is. The film has a great cast of the always funny Steve Carell (even when he doesn’t try), the under-appreciated Toni Collete, the vulgar Alan Arkin and the always charming Greg Kinnear as well the introduction of Abagail Breslin. Chicago is in my opinion the song of the film and even though they are nowhere near Chicago, it makes me think of their yellow van trucking along the I-10 headed to a beauty pageant that really doesn’t mean all that much.

2. New Order: Ceremony from Marie Antoinette
I believe another great choice of song. While many are torn about the biopic about the French teenage queen at Ms. Coppola hands, the music of the film was down right amazing. An ode to excess, youth and vanity, the soundtrack read like any cool kid’s musical library from over the years. One of the best choices that Coppola makes on the soundtrack is the addition of the classic song, Ceremony by New Order. New Order is the band that formed after the death of Ian Curtis and they continued Joy Division's legacy. Ceremony makes me think of more simple times, of youth enjoying their youths- which is a perfect match for the scene in Marie Antoinette in which Marie celebrates her birthday and in the midst of this formality and (pun intended) ceremony, a kid will do what a kid does best- be a kid.
4. Regina Spektor- Hero from 500 Days of Summer
Of course I wanted to put Temper Trap- Sweet Disposition, but I had already put that amazing song on a post already- but that doesn’t matter, I love the 500 Days of Summer of soundtrack and knew I could find another (or even 2). I love the film and thought that the Cure and The Smiths presented the perfect backdrop to what is in fact a sort of truthful parody of romantic melodrama. Hero by Regina Spektor plays during a pivotal scene in the movie where the screen is split between what the protagonist Tom wants and what is actually happening. The scene ends with the sad realization that Summer has not only moved on but is engaged to another, and with our hero tragically walking home. What a beautifully done scene and with Regina’s line “I’m the hero of the story I don’t need to be saved” wretches at you, as he walks alone.

4. Mumma-ra: She's Got you High from 500 Days of Summer
Another song from 500 Days of Summer. When I think of this film, I think of this song. This beautifully written song about a love that has kind of blossomed gradually (yet without noticing) makes me think of the film's protagonist, Tom Hansen and how he falls in love with Summer, gradually yet without him really knowing when or even how. It also speaks to the idea that it maybe a one sided love (which of course is how the film turns out) but that he just can't help it- she's got him high, and he doesn't even know it.
5. Coldplay: Don't Panic from Garden State
Of course anyone who's followed Coldplay knows that Don't Panic was the first track on their huge debut album Parachutes- but Zach Braff uses this song to full effect. As Andrew returns to the state of New Jersey for his mother's funeral, this song plays bittersweetly as Chris Martin chimes, "We live in a beautiful world...Yeah do, yeah do", which of course with slight hesitation and irony. A beautiful film, outstanding soundtrack (Iron and Wine, Frou Frou, The Shins and Zero 7, what's not to love?)- Don't Panic just opens it up perfectly.

6. My Bloody Valentine: Sometimes from Lost in Translation
If you are a friend of mine you know that I love Sofia Coppola and her films. Lost in Translation is one of my favorite films ever, in which it deals with two travelers who feel emotionally isolated in Japan. Both characters Bob (played by the amazing Bill Murray) and Charlotte (played by Scarlett Johannsen) while both in different places in their lives, realize that that they both are stuck in lives they don’t want to live in. Emotionally and now physically trapped in another country, the two create a bond in their shared ennui. Sometimes by My Bloody Valentine encapsulates these two characters perfectly in Coppola’s dream like world, where everything is soft, every action truly meaningful and the silence truly deafening.

7. Belle and Sebastian: Piazza, New York Catcher from Juno
I always have to laugh when I see this film- a debut for writer Diablo Cody this one really hits in all the right places. Director Jason Reitman uses music to great affect in this film- Kimya Dawson brings forth an artistic/whimsical feel to the entire film. This classic brings forth a wittyness/word play that runs rampant through the film, as well as that great acoustic tone- this song is just cool, and the Ellen Page's Juno is just that- cool.

8. Badly Drawn Boy: Above you Below Me from About a Boy
One of my favorite films ever. Toni Collette returns once again to my playlist and does a great job playing the role of eccentric and very depressive mother just trying to get by with her son Marcus, who she loves dearly. Hugh Grant, plays the kind of asshole bachelor Will, who in his attempts to hook up with single mothers gets roped into Marcus's life somehow. The two learn from each (not as cheesy as it sounds) and it ends up with a great scene of two singing Killing Me Softly and getting pelted with food. Above You and Below Me represents their unique friendship perfectly in which the line "I will take you as you are, please accept me as I am".

9. Nancy Sinatra: Bang Bang from Kill Bill Vol.1
What a great choice of song to start out this bloody tale of revenge. While this song was written decades ago, the audience feels like this song was written for the blood splattered bride as we see her and her wedding party gunned down in cold blood by her former colleagues and former lover Bill. I remember watching this scene and just getting chills, Nancy’s cool yet sad voice in the midst of this chaos and violence, Tarantino is a true auteur.
10. Tan Dun and Yo-yo Ma: Eternal Vow from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
A great film from China and another great film from the gifted and multi-talented Ang Lee, everything about Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is romantic- done with a Chinese flare. In the backdrop of the beautiful and ancient China, two warriors become entrapped in a game of cat and mouse caused a by a free spirit yet troublesome young woman who feels trapped in her societal role of what a woman should be back then. Tan Dun creates a beautiful song true of the emotional weight of film. A beautiful song that thanks to the amazing cellist Yo Yo Ma just breaks your heart and makes you feel the spirit of this Chinese love story.
